Website SEO fundamentals, without the jargon

SEO is the work of making your pages easy for search engines to find, understand, and show to people looking for what you offer. Here's what matters most for a small or mid-sized business.

Search engines need to find your pages

Pages are discovered through links and a sitemap. If a page isn't linked from anywhere and isn't in the sitemap, it may never be found.

Settings that block crawlers, or pages that require a login, won't be indexed.

Each page should have one clear topic

A page title and a main heading that describe the page in the words customers use help search engines match it to searches.

Combining every service on one page makes it hard to rank for any of them.

Content answers real questions

Useful pages explain what you offer, who it's for, where you work, and what happens next. Thin pages that repeat the same text with a different city name tend to perform poorly.

Technical basics

Pages should load reasonably fast, work on phones, use secure connections (https), and avoid broken links.

What SEO can't promise

No one controls search rankings. Results depend on competition, your content, and time. Be cautious of guaranteed rankings or traffic numbers.
